2024 World Day for the Prevention of and Healing from Child Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Violence: 18 Nov. An lnternational Crusader for the Rights and Responsibilities of Citizens, Dr Oluedo Eric, has strongly warned on the grave danger the entire World faces by continuing Child Abuse practices in the face of Uncontrolled Artificial Intelligence, Social media and Digital Innovations left in the hands of these abused and angry children. Speaking on 2024 Theme: “Emerging technologies: threats and opportunities for the protection of children from sexual exploitation and sexual abuse”, Dr Oluedo, who is also a Mediation and Arbitration Expert, stressed that an abused child is an angry and unforgivable child. It is this anger and aggression from rampant cases of Child Abuse, that contribute to their very poor mental and social health, zero empathy and very poor academic and career successes. Hence they constantly engage in violent retaliatory behaviors as witnessed recently in the alarming rate of banditry, terrorism, kidnapping and domestic servants killing and robbing their employers.
Affirming the need to eliminate and prevent all forms of child sexual exploitation, abuse and violence and to promote the dignity and rights, including mental and physical health and healing, of those who experience child sexual exploitation, abuse and violence, on 7 November 2022, the General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/77/8, proclaiming 18 November of each year as the World Day for the Prevention of and Healing from Child Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Violence.
Sexual abuse of children and adolescents is a gross violation of their rights and a global public health problem. It adversely affects the health of children and adolescents. Health care providers are in a unique position to provide an empathetic response to children and adolescents who have been sexually abused. Such a response can go a long way in helping survivors recover from the trauma of sexual abuse. Children, especially girls, are at a greater risk of experiencing forced sex and sexual exploitation, abuse and violence, including both online and offline, and itβs also a common situation during armed conflicts.
Many victims and survivors never disclose and/or seek justice, rehabilitation or support because of the shame. For many victims and survivors, their child abuse experience affects their physical and mental health and well-being, and sometimes there are lifelong consequences.
The sexual abuse and exploitation of children is a violation of human rights and a public health problem with significant consequences for global health and development. There is an imperative to hold perpetrators to account, ensure the access of survivors and victims to justice and remedies, as well as to facilitate open discussion on the need to prevent and eliminate their stigmatization, promote their healing, affirm their dignity, and protect their rights.
