2025 International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust: a Health Policy expert, Dr Oluedo Eric, has warned that Adolf Hitler’s Holocaust (where six million Jews were massacred) will be a child’s play if the current antisemitism sponsored by some radical countries, is not halted. Speaking on the Theme: “Holocaust remembrance and education for dignity and human rights”, Dr Oluedo, who is also an International Crusader for the Rights and Responsibilities of Citizens, noted that Adolf Hitler (1889-1945) is unquestionably the central figure in the story of the Holocaust. It was the combination of his virulent hatred of Jews and his success in creating a political movement that was able to seize control of Germany that made the campaign to exterminate the Jews possible. Today, As we are witnessing an alarming rise of antisemitism around the globe, it is more important than ever for us to recognize the critical lessons of Holocaust history as we commemorate the victims and honor the survivors.
Adolf Hitler (20 April 1889 – 30 April 1945) was an Austrian-born German politician who was the dictator of Nazi Germany from 1933 until his suicide in 1945. He rose to power as the leader of the Nazi Party becoming the Chancellor in 1933 and then taking the title of Führer und Reichskanzler in 1934. His invasion of Poland on 1 September 1939 marked the start of the Second World War. He was closely involved in military operations throughout the war and was central to the perpetration of the Holocaust: the genocide of about six million Jews and millions of other victims. In his speech, the UN Secretary-General, Guterres, said “And efforts are being made to recast and rehabilitate Nazis and their collaborators. We must stand up to these outrages.
In these days of division – and more than a year since the appalling 7th October terror attacks by Hamas – we must hold fast to our common humanity. We must condemn antisemitism – just as we must condemn all forms of racism, prejudice and religious bigotry. And we must renew our resolve to defend the dignity and human rights of all. Those causes go to the very core of the United Nations. We will never forget – and we will never waver in that fight.” On the same issue, Netanyahu said, “You will not tie our hands. If Israel is forced to stand alone, we will stand alone and will continue to smite our enemies until we achieve victory”.
Every year, UNESCO pays tribute to the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and reaffirms its unwavering commitment to counter antisemitism, racism, and other forms of intolerance that may lead to group-targeted violence. The date marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz Birkenau German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp by Soviet troops on 27 January 1945. It was officially proclaimed, in November 2005, International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust by the United Nations General Assembly. “Every year, this symbolic date urges the international community to remember the Six million Jews who were murdered alongside countless other victims of Nazi brutality. At a time when there are fewer and fewer direct witnesses of the Holocaust, marking the twilight of what historian Annette Wieviorka calls “the era of the witness”, we must commit ourselves with ever greater gravity to the perpetuation of its memory.” 2025 commemoration will mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz Birkenau German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp.
The Holocaust profoundly affected countries in which Nazi crimes were perpetrated, with universal implications and consequences in many other parts of the world. Member States share a collective responsibility for addressing the residual trauma, maintaining effective remembrance policies, caring for historic sites, and promoting education, documentation and research, more than seven decades after the genocide. This responsibility entails educating about the causes, consequences and dynamics of such crimes so as to strengthen the resilience of young people against ideologies of hatred. As genocide and atrocity crimes keep occurring across several regions, and as we are witnessing a global rise of antisemitism and hate speech, this has never been so relevant.
