2024 International Migrants Day, 18 Dec. A Health Policy and Management Expert, Dr Oluedo Eric, has identified the Pathological Corrupt Practices of most African Leaders as the main Push factors that send African Professionals, Youths and Best Brains into Legal and Illegal Migrations. He warned African Leaders to urgently address the Political, Economic, Social, Law and Order, and Technological Push factors causing enormous Brain Drain and Capital Flight in Africa since time is no longer on their side due to the emergence of Social Media, Artificial Intelligence etc. Speaking on the 2024 Theme: ‘Honouring the contributions of migrants and respecting their rights’, Dr Oluedo who is also an International Crusader for the Rights and Responsibilities of Citizens, stated that Migrants have rights under International Law which include:
Right to life:
Migrants have the right to life, and should be protected from arbitrary arrest and detention, torture, and inhuman treatment.
Freedom of movement:
Migrants have the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state, and to leave and return to their country.
Economic, social, and cultural rights:
Migrants have the right to work in fair conditions, and to an adequate standard of living. They also have the right to social protection, and to the highest attainable standards of physical and mental well-being.
International protection:
Migrants have the right to freedom from torture, and access to education, healthcare, and decent work. Migrants are generally entitled to the same human rights protections as all Individuals.

International Migrants Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2000, in response to the growing number of migrants across the world, in addition to, marking the establishment of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families, adopted by the United Nations in 1990, that came into force in 2003. This convention aimed to enhance the protection of migrant workers and their families, ensuring that their rights are upheld regardless of their status or location. By focusing on this, International Migration Day aims to foster a more compassionate and equitable world where the contributions of migrants are acknowledged and their challenges addressed. It is a global observance dedicated to promoting a more inclusive and equitable world for all and advocating for equal and fair migration policies. It also serves as a platform for raising awareness about the issues faced by migrants, including their rights, integration challenges, and contributions to host communities. The theme raises awareness about migrants’ exploitation while highlighting migrants’ positive contributions to society.
