2024 World Teacher’s Day: A University Teacher, Dr Oluedo Eric has frowned at the consistent misinterpretation and misapplication of the African saying that: “Teachers’ reward is in heaven” which simply means that the rewards for teachers’ daily sacrifices, toils and hard works in shaping the minds and lives of the future leaders of the society can never be adequately rewarded in monetary terms. Speaking on the Theme for World Teacher’s Day 2024: “Valuing teacher voices: towards a new social contract for education”, Dr Oluedo who is also a Crusader for the Rights and Responsibilities of Citizens, called on all who benefited from the hard work and daily commitment of Teachers to start immediately to appreciate their Teachers. Teachers receive small reward for the cost of their education, the long hours they invest in their students, the financial sacrifices they make, the money they spend for supplies not provided by their schools, the disre- spect they often get from students and parents alike, and the administrative hoops they have to jump through. Without their devotion to the students they teach and their sincere efforts to make a positive impact on their lives, they could earn much greater income elsewhere.
The history of World Teachers Day dates back to 1994 when it was established by UNESCO. It commemorates the adoption of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation for the status of teachers in 1966. This recommendation set the standards for the Rights and Responsibilities of Teachers globally, and norms for governing their recruitment, career development and employment. It is annually celebrated on October 5 across the globe to honour and recognise the valuable contributions of teachers in our lives. What would have we been, if there were no teachers who stood up for us in our childhood? Teachers undeniably have an important role to play in our lives and are known as second incarnations of God.
Teachers play an instrumental role in fostering creativity and critical thinking and preparing students to become noble citizens. World Teachers Day serves as a global platform for acknowledging the hard work and dedication of teachers and also raises awareness about challenges, like inadequate resources, low pay and time limitations faced by them. Giving gifts to a teacher is a beautiful practice that can uplift teachers and remind them that they are making a difference in the lives of their students.
