2024 International Mother Earth day: UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned of the impact of global chaos caused by pollution, greenhouse gases or the elimination of species and ecosystems.
Guterres called for restoring harmony with nature, embracing sustainable production and consumption, and protecting from harm.
International Mother Earth Day was established in 2009, by the United Nations General Assembly under Resolution A/RES/63/278. The Resolution was introduced by Bolivia and endorsed by over 50 member states.
On April 22, people unite to celebrate International Mother Earth Day. The day is to focus on the responsibility to rebuild our troubled relationship with nature. It recognizes that “the Earth and its ecosystems are our home” and that “it is necessary to promote harmony with nature and the Earth.
This year, the issue of plastic pollution is the primary focus of Mother Earth Day.
The Theme for year 2024 is “Planet vs. Plastics,” highlighting the health and environmental hazards posed by plastic.
Every year, millions of tons of plastic waste end up in oceans and landfills. This plastic enters the food chain, harms wildlife, and pollutes our environment.
World Earth Day not only draws attention to these growing problems, but it also serves as a crucial platform for spreading word about these problems and motivating people all over the world to take action. With this theme, the organisation aims to reduce plastic dependency and make the earth plastic-free.
General Assembly President Miguel d’Escoto
Brockmann welcomed the creation of International Mother Earth Day, saying:
“International Mother Earth Day promotes a view of the Earth as the entity that sustains all living things found in nature.
