2025 World Bicycle Day, June 3: A Public Health Physician, Dr Eric Oluedo, has called on Road Designers, Funders of Public Roads construction and African Governments, to ensure that Bicycle Routes are included in all the Public Roads being constructed in the Africa as done in other developed countries. This will motivate more Citizens to embrace Cycling as a sustainable and healthy means of transportation. Speaking on the theme of 2025 World Bicycle Day celebration: “Not just a sport, a driver of change”. Cycling is no longer synonymous with sport, leisure or childhood. Cycling is about well-being, quality of life and a more habitable environment. Dr Oluedo, added that regular cycling, amongst other benefits, boosts heart health and promotes healthy weight management.
World Bicycle Day was first marked on June 3, 2018, following a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on April 12, 2018, during its 72nd Regular Session. The resolution was supported by all 193 member states, encouraging the inclusion of bicycles in regional, subnational and international development programs and policies. The day aims to promote various benefits of cycling, including strengthening education, promoting tolerance, preventing diseases, encouraging physical exercise and facilitating social inclusion. The World Health Organization (WHO) underscores that cycling is an effective way to achieve recommended activity levels, making it an important practice for maintaining health and well-being.
With growing concerns about the lack of physical activity, pollution, and its associated health hazards, bicycles have become a clean, affordable and environmentally friendly mode of transportation. World Bicycle Day promotes the use of bicycles to help achieve cleaner air and the conservation of nature, addressing both health and environmental issues effectively. The day encourages active transport used by millions worldwide, combining exercise and practicality. With zero emissions, bicycles are a clean and green mode of transportation. It encourages adventure and bonds among cyclists who have similar interests.
In conclusion, βLife is like riding a Bicycle. In order to keep your balance, you must keep moving.” β Albert Einstein.
