2024 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction: A Public Health Expert, Dr Oluedo Eric, has advised Nigerians to avoid being exposed to Disasters because of the deadly and costly consequences that accompany Disasters, like the petrol tanker explosion in Jigawa State on 15th October 2024 that claimed about 100 lives. Speaking on the death of about 100 people following a petrol tanker explosion in Majiya Town, Taura local government area of Jigawa State on Tuesday 15th October 2024, he lamented that if people obeyed police warnings that they should stay clear from scenes of accidents involving fuel tankers, the Disaster could have been averted. Because Disasters are sudden, unexpected and always with adverse consequences, relevant Disaster Management Agencies should be equipped for Prevention, Mitigation, Preparedness, Early Response, Recovery and Rehabilitation.

The Theme for 2024 is: “The Role of Education in Protecting and Empowering Youth for a Disaster-Free Future.” Disasters disproportionately affect children and youth, with millions impacted by climate change, natural hazards, and emergencies each year. It is our responsibility to ensure that they are not just passive recipients of information but are actively engaged in disaster risk reduction efforts. Education plays a pivotal role in equipping young people with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate and mitigate the risks posed by disasters. By fostering a culture of preparedness and resilience, we can empower the next generation to understand and respond effectively to the challenges they face. It is vital to integrate disaster risk reduction into the school curriculum to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to respond to risks.

The annual celebration is to communicate to the people and communities around the world on how they can try to reduce their exposure to disasters and raise awareness about the importance of reining in the risk that they faced. Community leaders have been charged to establish collaboration with schools within their environment in order to develop disaster response programmes tailored to local needs by leveraging on their unique strengths and resources. This day is observed on October 13 to educate the people around the world on how they can lower the risk faced by the natural disaster and reduce the loss of money and human lives.
