2024 International Day of Sign Languages, 23rd September: An lnternational Crusader for the Rights and Responsibilities of Citizens (AFORRC INTL), Dr Eric Oluedo, has called on Enugu state Government to embrace fully the Theme for this year’s International Day of Sign Languages: “Sign up for Sign Language Rights” in her 260 Smart Schools, for the benefit of all deaf people and other sign language users. Speaking on 2024 International Day of Sign Languages, Dr Oluedo reminded world leaders that
the UN General Assembly proclaimed 23 September as the International Day of Sign Languages in order to raise awareness of the importance of sign language in the full realization of the human rights of people who are deaf.
The resolution establishing the day acknowledges that early access to sign language and services in sign language, including quality education available in sign language, is vital to the growth and development of the deaf individual and critical to the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals. It recognizes the importance of preserving sign languages as part of linguistic and cultural diversity. It also emphasizes the principle of “nothing about us without us” in terms of working with Deaf communities.
The International Day of Sign Languages is a unique opportunity to support and protect the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of all deaf people and other sign language users. 2024 celebration will once again highlight the unity generated by sign languages. World leaders and other government officials are expected to sign this year’s theme “Sign up for Sign Language Rights” in their national and sub national sign languages. As we approach the 20th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), adopted in December 2006, let us strive towards a better implementation of the CRPD at the national and sub national levels through the linguistic human rights of deaf people and other sign language users.
