2024 World Patient Safety Day, September 17: A Public Health Physician, Dr Oluedo Eric, has praised the Governor of Enugu state, Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for the construction of a 250-bed, ultra-modern Quaternary Enugu International Hospital for the transformation of the health sector and reversal of medical tourism in Enugu state and Nigeria. Speaking on the Theme of the World’s Patient Safety Day, “Improving diagnosis for patient safety”, “Get it right, make it safe!” Dr Oluedo insists that only transformed health facilities like the Quaternary Enugu International Hospital will address this year’s theme. This year the theme is “Improving diagnosis for patient safety” with the slogan “Get it right, make it safe!”, highlighting the critical importance of correct and timely diagnosis in ensuring patient safety and improving health outcomes.

World Patient Safety Day is an opportunity to raise public awareness and foster collaboration between health Policymakers, health Purchasers, health Providers, Patients and Public to improve patients safety. A diagnosis identifies a patient’s health problem, and is a key to accessing the care and treatment they need. A diagnostic error is the failure to establish a correct and timely explanation of a patient’s health problem, which can include delayed, incorrect, or missed diagnoses, or a failure to communicate that explanation to the patient.
All stakeholders are enjoined to prioritize diagnostic safety and adopt a multifaceted approach to strengthen systems, design safe diagnostic pathways, support health workers in making correct decisions, and engage patients throughout the entire diagnostic process.

World Patient Safety Day is an annual observance on September 17th, established by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to raise global awareness about patient safety, promote actions to enhance safety in healthcare, and encourage stakeholders to unite for safer healthcare practices. The day is recognised to address the significant burden of harm that unsafe medical practices cause worldwide. It highlights the need for improved healthcare systems and practices that prioritise the well-being of patients. With an estimated 134 million adverse events occurring annually in hospitals in low- and middle-income countries, patient safety is crucial to reducing preventable harm and deaths.
